Apple How To Guide

Tips: How to Change Audio Import Settings of iTunes on Mac and Windows

The other day, I wanted to go back in time and bring back to life all the retro songs that I had accumulated in CD by tearing them all apart. While I was going through the task, I found iTunes importing and rip CDs with MP3 encoders at 160kbps by default. But I’ve discovered several options, including AAC, AIFF, Apple Lossless (m4a), MP3 and WAV to import and encode music. I used Apple Lossless (m4a) and found it just about the money. Changing the audio import settings in iTunes on Mac and Windows PC is simple, and you should know this hack if you often copy CDs using iTunes.

You can quickly access the settings of the iTunes encoder from the iTunes import screen or preferences. In addition, the process is quite similar on macOS and Windows. Enough of gossip. Let’s start!

How to Change the Audio Import Settings in iTunes on MAC

  1. Launch iTunes and insert a CD to tear it up
  2. On the import screen, you have to click on the gear icon in the upper right corner.
  3. Now you can adjust the audio import encoding settings according to your needs.

Choose one of the following options:

  • AAC Encoder
  • AIFF Encoder
  • Apple Lossless Encoder
  • MP3 encoder
  • WAV encoder

You can adjust the quality settings for imported music in the “Settings” section. Although higher quality and higher bit rate audio files sound a bit better, they consume more disk space. So, keep it in mind before choosing higher quality and higher bit rate audio files.

How to change the iTunes CD encoding via Preferences on Windows and MAC

  2. Click Preferences in iTunes on Mac.

Adjust the iTunes import settings according to your needs. Click on the arrow next to the encoder (X) and select your preferred option:
