YouTube TV ditches the App Store billing, cancel the accounts do not change payment methods

YouTube TV will become the latest subscripti service to drop support for Apple’s in-app billing system. CNET the reports from March, YouTube TV will no lger support billing via Apple, and that users must change their billing settings before.

According to YouTube, subscribers who currently pay for YouTube TV via an App Store in-app purchase will have their accounts automatically canceled the first billing date after March 13. Subscribers will have until this day to put in place a new form of payment.

In a statement, YouTube said that Apple ctinues to be an important partner”, but he does not go into detail about the reasing behind this change.

YouTube TV is the latest subscripti service to move away from Apple billing. It’s also taking a more aggressive approach than the others by forcing existing customers to change their billing settings, or the risk of having their subscriptis cancelled. For example, Netflix has dropped in-app subscripti billing iOS last year, but ly for new customers.

Most companies are more skeptical of Apple’s revenue-sharing through the App Store. Apple charges a 30% fee in the first year of the subscripti billed through the App Store, but this tax falls to 15% after the first year. Moving all the customers off of the App Store billing, YouTube will have more to share YouTube TV revenues — which is likely to be profitable or running razor thin margins with Apple.

“YouTube TV no lger supports in-app purchases iOS,” a spokesman for YouTube said in a statement. “Apple ctinues to be an important partner to YouTube, and our users can still enjoy their favorite ctent iOS devices.”
