Apple has now tested 55 automous vehicles public roads in California by 83 drivers, according to macReports . That's up from 45 cars registered with the California Department of Motor Vehicles in March. In April 2017, Apple ly had three vehicles registered at the DMV.
Although this suggests that Apple will ctinue to develop its automous vehicle initiative, it also means that Apple currently owns the secd largest fleet of automous vehicles in California. It is surpassed ly by General Motors, which has 104 automous cars the road.
For comparis, Waymo has 51 self-driving cars and Tesla has 39. Uber, formerly e of the first automous car testers, suspended his program in March after a fatal incident involving e of his vehicles .
The Apple fleet is entirely made up of modified Lexus RX450h SUVs (the same vehicles that Waymo uses) which sports advanced sensor and compent networks. The main objective is the development of "automous systems" underlying for automous vehicles.
Although California allows fully automous vehicle testing, Apple has not obtained the required permits. In other words, all Apple's tests still involve human security pilots.
