We have seen many benchmarks for the new Mac Pro, but if you want to get an idea of how it fits in actual use, a British animati studio shared how it used an access anticipated e to work the film Jumanji: the next level.
Lunar Animati said that animati is e of the most difficult tasks for a computer, and it had initially thought that Apple's failure to update the Mac Pro trash could have forced him to switch to PCs…
The company said in a blog that the iMac Pro allowed it to hold the fort while it waited for the new Mac Pro.
Since we launched the animati studio in 2014, our entire pipeline has been based the Mac. However, in recent years it has been more difficult than we would have liked. With fewer and fewer hardware updates and the seemingly limited release of the Mac Pro trash, things certainly looked bleak. We have had many cversatis about how we might possibly have to switch to using PCs.
Fortunately in 2017, Apple announced the iMac Pro, which has been our main studio producti machine for all artists. Now the new Mac Pro has arrived and we are really excited to see how it will evolve our studio.
Apple then provided Lunar with early access to what it describes as a mid-range Mac Pro. Mid-range by the standards of the animati studio, anyway.
3.2 GHz Intel Xe W 16-core processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.4 GHz
192 GB (6 x 32 GB) of DDR4 ECC memory
Two Rade Pro Vega II with 32 GB of HBM2 memory each
4 TB SSD storage
Apple Afterburner Card
- Pro Display XDR
This came at a particularly opportune time.
The timing of the machine recepti couldn't have been better as the studio was about to start working the new Jumanji film, JUMANJI THE NEXT LEVEL. We were respsible for creating the “Main Ends” (MOE), which is essentially the end credits of the film.
It was a fantastic project and an opportunity for us as a studio and involved a number of difficult aspects that you can expect from working a feature film.
The project had to be photorealistic, and there were 28 unique panels for credits, each panel presenting at least e film-related accessory. This took place over a two-minute sequence.
The project would be de with a single camera movement, and there were also weather effects to create. All of this had to be de within four weeks. For all those who wder, four weeks is not lg…
It is said that the iMac Pro machines it used before the Mac Pro weren't quite up to par.
e of the immediate things that we noticed as so as we started the animati phase an iMac Pro was that we were having trouble putting all the assets in a scene with all of their high resoluti texture maps without running out of graphics RAM (…)
Indeed, we can reduce the resoluti of the scene textures and the problem disappears. However, it's good for working with the stage, but because clinging to …
