The 2018 revisi of the MacBook Pro has arrived and, as usual, it is available in two sizes, a 13 and 15-inch versi. In appearance, the new Apple laptops are exactly the same as those of previous generatis, but significant improvements have been made.
The Apple MacBook Pro from mid-2018 establishes two firsts for its laptops: quad-core processors all 13-inch models and hexa-core processors all 15-inch models. These changes are made possible by Intel’s 8th generati Coffee Lake architecture, of which Core i5, i7 and i9 processors in each new MacBook Pro are card-carrying members.
Another first for the MacBook Pro? DDR4 memory is now standard 15-inch models. This allows buyers to cfigure if desired, this machine with up to 32GB of memory.
Although the MacBook Pro has not been the subject of a major new physical design, there are quite a few noticeable changes in this revisi that will extend the real benefits to users. Watch our handy video guide for details.<
3rd generati butterfly keyboard
MacBook Pro butterfly keys are e of the most polarizing features to appear an Apple product for some time. Known to be noisy and absolutely insensitive when it is infiltrated by small particles of dust, this keyboard has always been a subject of ctroversy amg Apple users since its incepti.
top of all that, I’m still not a big fan of ultra-compact, low-speed keys. It is clear that no matter the key journey perceptible, many people still love this keyboard. I will ly respd to your persal preferences.
Up to 32 GB of DDR4 memory
Another first for the 2018 MacBook Pro is memory. Specifically, the 15-inch 2018 is the first Apple notebook that can be cfigured with more than 16 GB of RAM. The 8th generati chips of this MacBook Pro can handle up to 64GB of memory, but Apple allows you to maximize -demand cfiguratis with 32GB of DDR4 memory at 2400MHz. More memory means being able to run more pro applicatis simultaneously. If you’re heavy multitasking, the 15-inch MacBook Pro cfigured with 32 GB of RAM can potentially speed up your workflow.
All models of MacBook Pro 15-inch 2018 are equipped with a built-in Intel UHD Graphics 630 graphics processor, as well as a discrete Rade Pro 550X or 560X graphics processor from AMD with 4GB of GDDR5 memory . By default, automatic graphics switching is enabled to switch between integrated and discrete GPUs to save power. The 13-inch machines are equipped with an integrated Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655 graphics processor, without discrete graphics.
True Te Display
Apple did not improve the MacBook Pro resoluti, which we hope will happen soer than expected, but it gave it the True Te feature available high-end iOS devices.
True Te is a technology that automatically adjusts the white point of the screen to match the ambient lighting. This is particularly interesting for reading text, making the screen more natural depending current ambient lighting cditis.
To be clear, True Te will not be for everye, especially professials who expect the display to appear in a certain way at any time, but I think that it will 39; is e of the least popular technologies of high-level iOS devices.
An interesting feature of True Te the MacBook Pro is that the external displays cnected to the machine also change dynamically to match the ambient light.
Apple’s T2 chip
MacBook Pro models with previous-generati Touch Bar technology had a T1 coprocessor that drove the touchbar and had a secure enclosure for Touch ID. For 2018, the MacBook Pro is updated Apple’s T2 chip, the same SoC as that of the iMac Pro.
The T2 manages system operatis, such as secure boot, just like the iMac Pro. Secure Boot ensures that ly a legitimate versi of macOS loads your MacBook Pro at system startup, although this can be changed through System Recovery. The T2 also operates various ctrollers for system management, audio, and storage.
But e of the main benefits of the Apple T2 chip is that it allows support for Hey Siri for the first time a Mac. Hey, Siri allows you to ask Siri questis and issue commands without having to physically touch your machine.
Siri can also be used to perform a variety of other tasks, such as launching applicatis and issuing system commands to adjust screen brightness, disable services such as Bluetooth and launch websites. Hey Siri’s support makes using Siri more cvenient Mac, and it’s e of the nicest surprises of this MacBook Pro update.
4 TB SSD opti
The MacBook Pro NVMe SSDs were already extremely fast with the previous versi, and Apple maintained the status quo with its latest MacBook Pro refresh. As a result, you can expect maximum read and write speeds of 3.2GB / s and 2.2GB / s respectively, which is ridiculously fast. The novelty of this year is the additi of a build opti to the 4TB order, available exclusively for 15-inch models, with storage management ctrolled by the aforementied T2 chip.
The bad news is that the NVMe SSD storage used by Apple remains extremely expensive. To upgrade to a 4 TB SSD, you will need $ 3200 for the privilege. Yes, you read that – $ 3200 – more than the price of the rest of the computer! Instead, I recommend staying with the 512 or 1 TB build to order opti and using an external SSD USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 fast. Fortunately, there are many external SSDs that offer enough speed to easily handle 4K workflows.
Here are some of my external SSDs recommended for the MacBook Pro:
If you are interested in buying a MacBook Pro 2018, what model should you get? If you are a photo or video editor who plans to use the MacBook Pro as the main workstati, the 15-inch model is definitely the e you need. It is obviously less portable than the 13-inch MacBook Pro, but the smaller versi may not match the amount of real estate and additial optis the screen. This makes a huge difference when editing timelines and color correcti in applicatis such as Final Cut Pro X, DaVinci Resolve and Adobe CC.
The 15-inch MacBook Pro also comes with the following exclusives that are not the 13-inch model:
- Opti of 32 GB of RAM
- 4 TB SSD opti
- Rade Pro discrete GPU
- 6-core CPU
- Larger trackpad
- Much better speakers
If portability is your first factor, the 13-inch MacBook Pro obviously cannot be beaten. The smaller versi is also the e I recommend for users who work a tighter budget or simply do not need all the extra features available the larger model. However, if you are a creative professial who plans to use the new MacBook Pro as the main machine, opt for the 15-inch model and do not make a comeback.
